Rubbish Ruth and Redruth

Yesterday, I spent some time with Redruth’s own “Rubbish Ruth”—a lively town councillor and a dedicated campaigner for a cleaner, more connected community. Ruth has become a local legend, urging people to pick up litter daily and reminding us all of the impact of small, everyday actions.

She’s currently in the middle of a project to celebrate a significant birthday: speaking with 80 people in 80 days about our community and their involvement in it. Yesterday, it was my turn, and we spent a good while talking about all things Redruth.

Ruth and I spoke about the exciting developments in town, like Totally Locally Redruth, and our shared vision for Redruth’s future. She was particularly enthusiastic about Fluxus Cornwall CIC and the invention workshops we run – and our plans for a permanent workshop space. Her enthusiasm reminded me how small actions—like picking up a single piece of litter—can add up to meaningful change. At Fluxus Cornwall, that same principle guides our work. It’s about people coming together, contributing in their own ways, and achieving amazing results when their collective energy is put to good use.

Ruth’s passion and commitment to improving Redruth, and everywhere she goes with her bus pass, are inspiring. It’s a reminder of the ripple effect of each person’s contribution, no matter how small. I hope her drive encourages even more people to join in, get involved, and support all the positive initiatives happening in Redruth right now.
