Weekly Invention Workshops have started!
We had a lovely time launching the first of our weekly Invention Workshops yesterday.
Nine new faces turned up keen to find out what the project is about and to have fun inventing and learning new skills. The Art Room was buzzing with energy as ideas for bonkers contraptions and games started to flow.
This weekly Invention Club will enable us to put together a team of skilled people who can work together on bigger contraptions, games, machines and inventions. These will eventually form our home-made amusement arcade in Redruth.
A diverse group of people from teenagers to retired people came along, some with ideas they already had or projects they are already working on, which was great to see.
Tina introduced the project, showing some of our inspiration, such as Tim Hunkin’s Novelty Automation and Under The Pier Show. We also had a look at some of the items made in our previous workshops earlier this year.
This week we experimented with simple automata. These mesmerizing little machines are a good way of exploring different mechanisms and set the stage for bigger inventions down the road. We got to grips with cams and cranks and saw how basic movements can be combined to create more sophisticated machines.
By the end of the session, we had ideas for random tattoo-choosing machines, hot air balloons with flames and multiple movements, and Venus flytrap games! The best part was seeing the confidence people already had in working out how they were going to take their sketches and turn them into real things.
Come along next week and join our Invention Club. Whether you’re a seasoned maker or just curious about tinkering, we’d love to see you!
