From Japan to Redruth: Anna’s Creative Journey with Automata

Since December, we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming Anna to every single Invention Club session. Originally from Japan, she came to the UK to practise her English and deepen her skills in automata making – and she’s thrown herself into it with real dedication.
Anna has taken part in workshops with Fi Henshall, visited Paul Spooner’s legendary workshop, and spent countless hours developing her own creations. Earlier this year, she contributed a beautifully crafted piece to our exhibition, bringing a unique perspective shaped by her background and growing skillset.
She also supported our automata workshop on Murdoch Day, helping others get to grips with basic movements, while sharing her own knowledge and skills. Her commitment to learning, making, and collaborating has made her a valued part of our community – and a brilliant example of how creativity and curiosity can connect people from all over the world.
Anna is now returning to Japan, but we’ll be following her journey from afar. You can keep up with her work too on Instagram: @ankokun_girl0611
We’ll miss her energy and enthusiasm at the workshop, and we can’t wait to see what she makes next.

Here’s a look-back at what Anna has been doing during her time here:
